Dmitriy Kedrin. Painting

On December 3, the “13.20” Gallery at Quattro space (13 Myasnitskaya St., Building 20, Moscow) will open the exhibition “Painting” by Dmitriy Kedrin, a member of the Moscow Union of Artists (Section of Painting).

The exhibition presents works from two periods of Dmitriy Kedrin’s artistic career: fresh abstract compositions from 2024 and 2025, as well as earlier landscape paintings that tend towards stylisation.

Kedrin’s works are energetically charged. They emit a pulsation embedded in the vibrating structure of surfaces with varying transparency and colourfulness of lines.

“As a teenager, during the summer months, I wandered through the forests of the Moscow region with an easel and two sandwiches in my pocket, searching for a picturesque subject. I rarely encountered people in the forests or on the roads; I only heard a tractor working in the distance or cows mooing. If I spotted a rare passer‑by on a path or a horse slowly pulling a cart towards me, I would dash into the bushes and stay there until I was alone again — so I could dream and paint undisturbed.

Distant, deserted glades and old forest paths overgrown with marsh violets; abandoned buildings and bleak dormitories suddenly revealed between tree crowns; a workers’ settlement of six red‑brick five‑storey buildings in the middle of an endless yellow field; a shed at the edge of an apple orchard, with the orchard seeming to be at the end of the world; a lonely man’s house by the river, and solitude as the best time for happiness… That’s what I loved and still love.

My abstract works are, in essence, also landscapes. Space, air, planes, hidden corners, and mysterious distances, hints and half‑hints of reality… Since in this practice I have abandoned objectivity, I now pay more attention to the surface and the formal properties of the material. This requires more intrigue in composition and, overall, a different approach to harmonising the painting.

Abstraction is a fresh experience for me, yet I have been preparing for it for two decades. The image of painting that I cultivated in figurative works — demonstrative hand‑made execution with angular awkwardness, chance elements, and a lack of virtuosity — I continue to assert in abstraction, embracing newly found possibilities and energies…”
